Let me clarify: PCMacLAN is *never* required to access clients. Clients are
only accessible via TCP/IP with Retrospect for Windows. Somehow I botched
saying that with my last post...

Jay,
Where it says: "NOTE: Trial versions are currently available only for the

platform." it means that we only have a demo on the Windows side for the
actual server. You should have no problems logging in a Mac client using
the demo Windows Server. The thing to remember is that Windows
Jay,
Feel free to install client software on Macs on your network. You can log in
up to 100 clients (PC or Mac) with the trial version of Retrospect Backup.
PCMacLAN is NOT required as long as all clients have been configured for
TCP/IP.

I thank you for responding to my message. On Dantz's demo website, it
claims "NOTE: Trial versions are currently available only for the Windows
platform." Does this mean that we are incapable of adding Mac volumes to
Retrospect Backup Server without already having a third party software like

In my experience, Retrospect works great with two tape drives, if two
drives will give you basically the online capacity that you need.
Unlike a loader, you're not dealing with a goofy tape
loading/unloading mechanism, and you have 100% redundant hardware if
one of the tape drives dies. The on
Jeff,
This will work. It's what's called a "poor man's loader." (Yep, really.) For
more information, see p. 153 of the Retrospect 4.2 User's Guide under "How
Retrospect works with Multiple Backup Devices."

I'm new to the list.
I have a G3/400 blue and white server (320 MB) running ASIP 6.3.2 file, web,

Otherwise I agree, it just keeps growing.
do the laptops go home every single night, or can the users be persuaded to

you could write different backup server scripts to give the laptops prio
That sounded like a great suggestion!
I'll look in to that after vaccation.
To my case is that we also have some portables. I also have an 18 GB drive
as we used to backup stuff with before we bought the tapes.
Maybe I can mirror the portables to the drive during the day and copy the

Here's the best solution I've found.
Take five tapes and name them Monday thru Friday.
Write a script that does a full backup of your server every night. Make it
back up every Monday to the Monday tape, every Tuesday to the Tuesday tape,
etc.
Write a Backup Server that starts 5 minutes after th
I'm going onvacation next week so I haven't time to try this.
I have eight tapes named VXA-1, VXA-2 etc.
My strategy is to make normal backups Tuesday to Friday and Full (recykled)

If I make these eight scripts can I make them all execute weekley or do I

There are two different clients for the Mac, one for AppleTalk and
one for TCP/IP. If you have the TCP/IP client installed, then the
NTServer should be able to back up your Macs with no further software
required.
