The 16 MB catalog limit only applies to file backup sets. The catalog
portion of a file backup set is stored in the file's resource fork. Catalog
data for other backup sets (removable cartridge, CD-R/RW, tape) is written
to the data fork of the catalog file.

finishing their I/O toolkit for Mac OS X. We kinda need to work with

Yes. Backup Sets may be made up of different formats, provided they're the
same type (i.e., CD-R/RW, tape, removable cartridges). So you can mix Jaz
and DVD-RAM, or DAT and AIT. However, you cannot mix DAT and Zip, for
example, as they're used differently by Retrospect.
