Hi I'm new to the list here and thought I'd ask a question that some of
you
here might have knowledge about.
Quick synopsis of what's going on and what the plan is and ask for any
advice.
Feb 2000, Purchased 3 Mac Apple
tape.
hint, hint.
Also, anybody have a solution for notification of failures? I've
been
toying with hacking up an applescript solution to my pager, but if
someone's
already done it... ;-)
OK, that would be cooler still!

AFAIK, you are correct. All these guys are OEMing Sony's mechanism into
their boxes. BTW, Seagate isn't making the Sidewinder200 anymore. The
reason we went with Seagate's box is because we've had very good
experiences with their tech support and service. And indeed they came
through in
the server. And
when the server restarts, Faircom loads as a service.
Now whatever method you end up using to get fmp to stop, I can't stress
how important it is to test a restore after you do a backup. I don't know
what effect this would have on any open databases.

I think as long as the AppleShare server is running when you do your backups, permissions get backed up automatically. If you ever have to restore an entire ASIP volume, following the Retrospect instructions (you do a second restore for privs.) works just fine.

an empty tape to a storage set. If you name an empty tape now, Retrospect still sees it as blank and will use it however it sees fit. Granted, that's a feature, not a bug. But it would also be a good feature to override that feature. :-)

I believe if you have a storage set named Bob and you erase and name all your tapes in a magazine, 1-Bob...8-Bob, etc. (assuming an 8 tape mag) ANY other backup set assigned to that script will be able to use those empty named tapes. Only after they have data on them does retrospect really assign
? Don't
care how "out there" it is. As always I'm interested in any helpful tips
or tricks.

Michael,
Try making a storage set for each tape you want to use in your backup
script. If your backup script is set to "full" or "recycle" (depending on
your version of retro) the backup script will overwrite the tape when it's
re-inserted.

the storage sets from retro on the W2K
box (can this even be done?) but that would probably take longer than I'd
care to wait. :-)
Can I do this?
