Documentary »Gestern Mitte Morgen« (Yesterday Mitte Tomorrow) by acclaimed filmmaker Peter Zach, whose new film »Beyond Boundaries« recently hit the screens of Berlin cinemas, is a portrait of the post-1989 alternative culture scenes coming out of the temporary autonomous zone that was Berlin's central district of Mitte. Taking his cue from Alfred Döblin's landmark novel "Berlin Alexanderplatz", Zach re-visits that story's Mitte locations and explores how artists and cultural activists engage with these spaces, both in the freedom they offered at the time (1995) and their historical legacy. We witness the origins of choreographer Sasha Waltz' reinvention of Tanztheater, remember Christo and Jeanne-Claude's era-defining Reichstag wrapping, revisit clubs and art spaces like Tacheles born out of squatter culture and follow seminal underground art galleries. Gestern Mitte Morgen celebrates the alternative culture of Mitte, a snapshot before some artists went on to broader success, while others continued to pursue their aesthetic project regardless of overground crossover.
