Jeremy - many thanks for your help. I downloaded the RPMs from samba.org but there was no change. I did the dreaded last-resort thing and rebooted the server, and now (fingers crossed) samba appears to be behaving. I`m just a bit sad that I needed to reboot; there goes my nice uptime! Thanks
