Trying to upgrade from 3.0.14a to 3.0.23c. So far, things seem to be working,
but the following entries appear in the smbd error
log. The test machine is a domain client (server is still 3.0.14). The sids
listed are exactly as they appear in the ldap tables.
What makes them invalid? Anyone
On my setups /etc/ldap.conf is a symlink to /etc/openldap/ldap.conf.

Ok, first
I had (and still do, really) a similar problem. Has to do with nmb failing to
respond. When they disappear, try running
smbcontrol nmbd ping on the samba server and see if it responds with pong.
I have not yet figured out why nmbd stops responding. The error logs have
offered no clue. BTW,
I believe I've set up a machine as a BDC for a Samba PDC and I'm trying to test
that. Doc sources are the Samba3 Howto and Samb3 by
example.
net lookup dc (run on bdc or other samba server)lists 2 IP's that indicate that
it is in fact a BDC.
net lookup dc
172.21.1.10
172.21.1.30
However
Does samba not store the ldap admin password between boots? Whenever I reboot
my BDC I have to reissue the smbpasswd -w x
command before it can successfully validate anything.
Is this normal?
TIA.

Any ideas as to why?

I've been seeing the following message in the nmbd lof:

It has been uncharacteristically quiet the past couple of days.

There are probably other (better) methods, but one is:
Pick a file on the file system in question and try the command
attr -g aa FileName
If EA's are support you'll get a message saying No data found (unless you
actually have an attribute named aa), otherwise it will
report Operation not

As a follow up, changing the ldap delete dn = no did allow the
smbldap-userdel script to work, but of course, now it leaves the
ldap posix entries.
I guess I'm just going to have to write my own script.

We had similar problems after migrating from NT4. The problem was in some of
the sambaAcctFlags. Most of our users have permanent
passwords and the sambaAcctFlags = UX. Did a little research, but couldn't
find anything that defined all the possible values.

Check out chapter 8 of Terpstra's Samba by Example.

I had a fairly painless upgrade from an NT4 server using the guidance in
chapter 9 of this doc. Yours should be even smoother.
Good luck,

OK, I have RTFM. All the I could find.
I cannot seem to set permissions via WINXP Pro explorer. No matter what I do
all I get is access denied - even if I own the file.
Samba log reveals:
[2005/04/20 10:56:08, 2] smbd/open.c:open_file(326)
larry opened file xghost.bin read=Yes write=No
Has anyone here actually seen or perhaps even used PowerSMB? It sounds like it
could be areal timesaver if it actually works or
exists for that matter.
TIA,
Larry

Is there a way to get Samba to validate users against the NIS (not NIS+) database.
I've tried compiling with --with-nis but when I
try to access a share I get this message in the samba log:
