I have a probably the same problem. I use Fedora 10 and the command service nmb status gives nmbd is dead but pid file exists (or something similar) Looking at the date of the pid file I noticed that it was a leftover from the last shutdown. So, probably something is going wrong when stopping the nmb service at shutdown, but when I start or stop manually it goes always fine. No special messages in the logfiles. any suggestions to further diagnose the problem?
