I am on the Houdini train for a couple of months now. And I really like it
for the most part, especially the more technical aspects are incredible and
way better than Softimage ever was. But I am still confused by all the
praise for Houdini in certain areas like poly modeling or scene assembly.
Just as additional info for every poor soul who is trying to get this
running after updating to Windows 10 recently (like us). We can confirm
that Takayoshi's custom PySide build works perfectly with Windows 10 and
Soft 2015.
One thing that took us a while to figure out, is that for us it only
- emReader is freeware for XSI users :)
That's great news! Thanks Eric!

There are new updates available for emTools, emReader and emTopolizer2.

Great post Andy! I'm probably biased, because I'm mainly working as a
lighter. But after thinking about the future for the last couple of days, I
came to the very same conclusion. Lighting and scene assembly is the
biggest hole to fill. Houdini will be a great replacement for FX and with
stuff
, not discouragement to any studio which wants to partner to
make something happen...

My problem with ICE based solutions is more on the caching rendering
side. You have to cache each and every strandpoint. With a million hairs
and a few substeps for motionblur, cache files are gigantic. A good hair
system should cache only cache the guides, the actual hair (and maybe even
styles
Hi List!
Does anybody know a way of getting all shaders, even unconnected ones
inside a light? Both/light.Shaders/ and
/light.FindShaders(constants.siShaderFilter)/ only return connected
shaders. I've found this solution for materials:

It looks really nice! But what about the original plan to create
'Portable Applications' which then run inside host applications like
maya and softimage? Basically what's the difference to the stuff in
these videos:

Did you render the channel to disk? The render region sometimes doesn't
show the framebuffers correctly. The channel is there, but it's very
very dark. Try rendering the channel to disk an watch it in an
application like nuke.

Hi list!
Does anybody know a way to access overrides via script without switching
to the pass the override lives in? I need to collect data from all
overrides in the scene and cycling through all passes becomes quite
unstable with heavy scenes

, the second menu
(View) has an option down there to switch between /Applied
Properties/ and /Local Properties/. Try toggling that and you'll
see what's local or not. It's /Applied Properties/ by default I believe.

S, can somebody enlighten me what's so great about ICE overrides
(one of our 4 amazing new features)? I just watched the video and all
that can be done since forever by overriding the values of low level
nodes instead of exposed compound parameters? Or am I missing something?

Hey Guillaume,
I was really sorry to hear you have to leave Autodesk. But the fact that
you've joined the Fabric crowd is very very exciting news! After seeing
your Nanode Videos I couldn't think of a better fit, et voila ;) Fabric
Engine is definitely getting more and more interesting.
