Hmmm, will have to look into xgen, but I'm starting to think it's
probably best to stick to Softimage for this as well.
Which is too bad as I am still looking for a way to use Maya as a
perfect companion to Softimage.

but doesn't Okino's PolyTrans (through addon, perhaps?) still offer
SI|3D support?
Might be less cumbersome than digging up ancient versions and getting
them to run again...

of the shader in the Maya docs are in conjunction with XGen might
account for my own little tests that seem to indicate that the shader
doesn't seem to do much in Softimage. Or am I mistaken?

Play with the Checkboxes, look at the logs and customize it.
That's how I create custom importers / exporters to be sure everyone is using
the same parameters and automatize some other things.
