I would think that allowing the kernel to load my modem would boost
performance, no?
There is no noticeable performance 'boost' between the two variants...
That's because these modems are too slow to have the extra overhead
of the userspace version make any difference.

On the other hand, I'm about to implement iso receive support, which
can't be done from userspace right now since usbfs doesn't support iso

You're gonig in the wrong way :
1 - Don't use patched pppd
2 - Don't use Speedmgmt
3 - Don't even think about using something
BTW,
If you use the RH 7.2 as delivered (kernel 2.4.7-10, pppd 2.4.4 ) and you
follow the instructions in the HowTo on installing the modem_run package and
the ppp config, you shoudn't encounter any serious problems, and you'll have
no need to recompile or patch the kernel !

Where is this pppd from. The last log showed a patched version of pppd
(with ATM support). I would just use the pppd that

Try /usr/sbin/lsof | grep usb as root BEFORE running modem_run.

Yes, it did have the alcatel drivers before but I thought I had got rid
of all traces of them. Do you think it would be worthwhile to reinstall

Redhat on. Are there any problems you know of with Radhat 09 April
Craig,
I know its not a lot of help but I am having EXACTLY the same problem !
My system is based on LinuxfromScratch with all tarballs compiled from
source and is using Kernel 2.4.4.

I'm having exactly the same problem here in the UK. I tried it on Red Hat
7.1 and SuSE 7.1 and it always fails the same way.
