I built my Sphinx documentation a few releases ago. I think I should
probably update my makefile. How do I do that? I don't know whether I have
to update other files too so there won't be some clash. What's the correct
process for doing thing?

There is no reason to update the makefile unless you want to use a new
builder. In any case you can simply use sphinx-quickstart and copy the
makefile, as long as you choose the same options for source and build
directories.
