Re: [NSP] SPO-studioB nova tv bastilja
I onda sledi slika. [SNN] The U.S. always forgets half the war and half the world
The U.S. always forgets half the war and half the world Laura Flanders Singapore is in the middle of a large, biennial arts festival and audiences here are frankly more interested in the international performers that are visiting than in the U.S. blockbuster that doesn't open here until next week. But reviews are trickling in from the Straits Times U.S. bureau; they complain, among other things, that there are no Pacific Islanders in Hollywood's Hawaii, and no mention of a rather significant regional war in which the attack on Pearl Habor was only a part. Go to the elegant National History Museum in Singapore's colonial center and you're gently reminded that on the day of the attack on Pearl Harbor, Japan simultaneously invaded the Philippines, Wake Island, Guam, Thailand, Malaysia, Shanghai and the island of Midway. By February 1942, the Sino-Japanese war had spread to most of Southeast Asia. Pearl Harbor however, chooses to leave that whole war out. Historians at the National Museum say that Washington would have been less surprised by the Japanese in December 1941, if Americans hadn't been so handicapped by their own prejudices and ignorance. Common stereotypes of squinty-eyed Asians fed foolish skepticism about the ability of Japanese pilots: The Americans paid for believing their own propaganda, say the Singaporeans. Japan's so-called Zero aircraft shown in the movie as if they were in shocking use for the first time had actually been in use against China for a year. The truth about Pearl Harbor is that Roosevelt et al were nowhere near as surprised as the movie suggests. Far from it. But Hollywood kept the U.S. public in the dark then, and Hollywood does the same today. It's a dark that costs lives, but it's invaluable to big power policymakers. Right now, for example, as George W Bush travels to Europe and speaks about building a constructive new relationship with Russia, he makes no such overture to Beijing and forges ahead with Missile Defense. From here, that's seen as disrespect, verging on the bellicose, yet the U.S. public is kept in almost total ignorance about the importance of China in this half of the world, for example. There's not one superpower, but rather two, as far as the Pacific's concerned, and China's closer. Just as there's not only one World War II but several, and Hollywood's version is a joke. The U.S. always forgets half the war and half the world Laura Flanders Singapore is in the middle of a large, biennial arts festival and audiences here are frankly more interested in the international performers that are visiting than in the U.S. blockbuster that doesn't open here until next week. [NSP] Putin Urges Disarming of Rebels in Kosovo
June 18, 2001 Putin Urges Disarming of Rebels in Kosovo By CARLOTTA GALL http://www.nytimes.com/2001/06/18/world/18PUTI.html SKOPJE, Macedonia, June 17 Russia and Yugoslavia said today that Kosovo was the main cause of instability in the Balkans and urged world leaders to ensure that Albanian terrorists in Kosovo and the region were completely disarmed. President Vladimir V. Putin, the first Russian president to visit Yugoslavia in over a decade, later warned that Macedonia could be a repeat of Kosovo, if Western pressure pushed the Macedonian leadership to give in to the demands of the rebels. Stability in the region is seriously threatened, above all from national religious extremism and intolerance, the main source of which today is in Kosovo, Mr. Putin told reporters after his talks with President Vojislav Kostunica of Yugoslavia. Mr. Putin was making a short working visit to Belgrade to show support for the eight-month-old government of President Kostunica, as it pulls the country out of 10 years of isolation under the former leader, Slobodan Milosevic. On his way home after meeting with President Bush in Slovenia on Saturday, Mr. Putin touched down briefly in Kosovo today to visit Russian peacekeeping troops at their base at Pristina airport and meet United Nations officials. Despite their common Slav and Orthodox heritage, relations between the former Russian President Boris N. Yeltsin and Mr. Milosevic were not warm, and no Russian president has visited Yugoslavia since Mikhail S. Gorbachev did in 1988. Mr. Putin said he agreed with Mr. Kostunica that the international community should do more to fulfill the United Nations resolution that regulates Kosovo and has made it a United Nations protectorate since NATO's war with Yugoslavia in 1999. We must do everything for the disarmament of the terrorists, he said, speaking of his concern for attacks against the dwindling Serbian community in Kosovo. I think that the international community's attitude is sobering somewhat in that regard, particularly with tragic and sad events in Macedonia, he said. Some 3,000 Russian troops are serving in Kosovo as part of the 38,000-member peacekeeping force led by NATO in Kosovo. Mr. Kostunica repeated his now familiar criticism of the United Nations mission in Kosovo. The crisis in Kosovo, and many wrong moves by the international community in Kosovo have caused instability in the entire region in southern Serbia, Macedonia and lately even in northern Greece, where ethnic Albanian terrorists have also made their presence felt, he said. He was referring to Yugoslav news media reports of activity by ethnic Albanians in northern Greece, which have not been independently confirmed. Mr. Kostunica said he and Mr. Putin had also discussed holding a conference on the Balkans that would put an end to the trend of redrawing borders in the Balkans and wars in the region. Mr. Putin flew on to Pristina on Sunday afternoon, to view Russian peacekeeping troops serving in both Kosovo and Bosnia and Herzegovina, and to meet with the NATO commander of peacekeeping troops. His trip was kept unannounced for security reasons. Russia is seen as an ally of Serbia by most Albanians, and Russian troops have come under attack in Kosovo. Developments in Macedonia are unfolding according to an extremely difficult scenario, he said in an address to Russian troops. The country's leadership is under strong pressure to satisfy the demands of extremists to the maximum. The Kosovo option is in fact being repeated. We know what it leads to. He said that the borders should be tightly sealed to prevent movement of men and weapons and that the rebels' access to international funds should be blocked. Macedonian leaders have failed to forge an agreement on political reforms to answer the grievances of the Albanian minority after three days of closed negotiations. Talks were set to resume Monday while a shaky cease-fire was still in force. Mr. Putin also criticized the United Nations' new framework for self- rule in Kosovo, drawn up by Hans Haekkerup, the head of the United Nations mission in Kosovo. The framework was too like a constitution and did not emphasize strongly enough that Kosovo remained a sovereign and territorial part of Yugoslavia, he said. Too many concessions have been made to radicals, he said. The document has a number of significant drawbacks to which the Russian side has drawn attention. http://www.nytimes.com/2001/06/18/world/18PUTI.html Miroslav Antic, http://www.antic.org/ STOP NOVOM SVETSKOM PORETKU ==^ EASY UNSUBSCRIBE click here: http://topica.com/u/?bUrBE8.bVKZIq Or send an email To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] This email was sent to: archive@jab.org T O P I C A -- Register now to manage your mail! http://www.topica.com/partner/tag02/register ==^
[NSP] Army Can't Explain How Gen. Clark Got Kosovo Campaign Medal Waiver
Army Can't Explain How Gen. Clark Got Kosovo Campaign Medal Waiver European Stars and Stripes June 16, 2001 Army Can't Explain How Gen. Clark Got Kosovo Campaign Medal Waiver By Jon R. Anderson, Stars and Stripes The Army is at a loss to explain who granted a waiver awarding retired Gen. Wesley Clark the Kosovo Campaign Medal. After four months of repeated queries, Army officials say theyre still not sure who approved the medal. Privately, officials say, they believe former Defense Secretary William Cohen approved the award, but have been unable to find the requisite paper trail for such awards to make sure. Cohen was not available for comment Friday. One senior Pentagon official speculated Clark may have been given the medal as a memento or token without actually being awarded the campaign ribbon. The Army says no way. Nowhere in the military do we hand out awards as mementos, said Col. Stephanie Hoehne, Clarks former aide and now a top Army spokeswoman. They are earned and they are awarded. When your boss pins an award on your chest, thats being awarded. Citing how paperwork sometimes gets misplaced or forgotten after verbal approval for an award is given, Hoehne said, Im not surprised it didnt make it into his records, if thats the case. That he needed a waiver at all has been a sticky issue for top officials who have been wrestling for more than a year with how to fix controversial criteria for the medal that has left thousands of troops who directly supported the 1999 air campaign unrecognized. Under rules for the medal established by the Pentagon, only those who served in and around the Balkans are eligible for the decoration. Service members must have served at least 30 consecutive days in the combat zone or 60 non-consecutive days traveling in and out of it. With Clark directing the 78-day air campaign mostly from his headquarters in Mons, Belgium, he and his staff not to mention thousands of troops supporting the effort from bases throughout Europe and the United States were left ineligible. According to European Command officials, Clark clearly did not meet the criteria and they were surprised to learn he had been awarded the medal last year. In fact, Clark received the very first of the newly minted medals during his retirement ceremony June 23, 2000, presided over by Army Chief of Staff Gen. Eric Shinseki. For his part, Clark told Stars and Stripes in February that he had no idea that he had needed a waiver and said that the medal was never meant to be a danger- or location-based award, but a service-based award. [NSP] SAMO DEKLARATIVNE OSUDE TERORIZMA
Press klub pod nazivom Makedonska kriza i Jugoslavija. Domacin Pres kluba: Milan Milosevic. [NSP] Hague indictment a mistake, Milutinovic says
Hague indictment a mistake, Milutinovic says Belgrade (dpa) - Serbian President Milan Milutinovic said Sunday that he is not worried about a possible extradition to the International War Crimes Tribunal, which he said made a mistake when indicting him two years ago over his role in the Kosovo war. The indictment is formalistic and not argued, he said in an interview with Belgrade's BKTV television, adding that he has never heard of villages and names listed in the indictment. I have no fear and feel no guilt because I think it is a mistake, but one cannot jump out if his skin, Milutinovic said. In his words, If somebody else had been president of Serbia at the time, he would have also been indicted. Milutinovic is the only member of the deposed Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic's regime who is still in office. Three other top officials were indicted alongside Milosevic and Milutinovic. Yugoslavia is under pressure from the West to extradite war crimes suspects and the ruling Democratic Opposition of Serbia (DOS) has signalled willingness to cooperate. But leading DOS officials appear concerned that a bill that would formalize the cooperation with the Hague tribunal might be shot down by their coalition partners from Montenegro, the Socialist People's Party (SNP). Even if the bill fails, though, extraditions would happen, DOS leaders in the Serbian goverment indicated. If the bill fails, DOS will have to take responsibility, becuase politicians cannot hide behind legal procedure Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic said Sunday in Belgrade, after meeting Russian President Vladimir Putin. He denied that he discussed the Hague tribunal with Putin and stressed that he does not know if the bill would be turned into a law. I cannot tell - am not psychic. The chances are half-half and I would not recommend a bet either way, he said after reporters insisted on his estimation of the outcome next Thursday. A day earlier, Serbian Justice Minister Vladan Batic also signalled that war crimes suspects face extradition whether or not the bill passes the parliament. His statement came a day after the find of another mass grave in Serbia, presumably containing bodies of Albanians killed in Kosovo and taken away in an organized campaign to destroy evidence of attrocities. The grave, near a Yugoslav Army (VJ) commando training camp in Petrovo Selo, contains the remains of between 20 and 25 bodies, mostly men. Serbian Interior Minister Dusan Mihajlovic said earlier that an order to security forces to clean up battlefields in Kosovo during the 1998-1999 war aimed to remove evidence of atrocities. He said the investigation traced the sanitation order to a meeting of Milosevic's cabinet. The first grave, with 86 bodies, was discovered near Belgrade last month and exhumation was underway, under observation of the Hague tribunal experts. The tribunal chief prosecutor Carla del Ponte would visit Belgrade on an unspecified day next week, to evaluate the progress Belgrade has made in cooperation with the United Nations' court, established to try war crimes suspects in former Yugoslavia. [SNN] GAYS MOVE TOWARDS POWER. NOT ONLY IN RUSSIA
GAYS MOVE TOWARDS POWER. NOT ONLY IN RUSSIA PRAVDA.Ru has already raised this issue. It appears that the active movement of sexual minorities towards power is taking place not only here in Russia, but also in the remote abroad. In the Brazilian city of San Paolo, a traditional parade of sexual minorities passed off. Well-known Brazilian politicians took part in it. In all, over 200,000 people joined in the 5th annual sexual minority parade. The pageant of homosexuals, Lesbians, bisexuals, and transvestites was crowned with a grandiose concert on the citys central square Prasa Republica. San Paolo prefect Marta Saplisi and vice-chairman of the Workers Party, deputy of the Federal Assembly Jose Jenoino turned up at the parade. It has not been specified in the reports whether the above politicians really belong to sexual minority or just showed up out of pure solidarity.
