Subject: [downwithcapitalism] Voronin blasts IMF, WB

MD News. 11 JUne 2001. Voronin Says IMF and WB Should Assume
Responsibility for Situation in Moldova.

Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin believes the International Monetary
Fund and World Bank should assume a part of responsibility for the
current state of things in this republic.

The head of state said in his interview with Rossiyskaya Gazeta (Russian
Government's organ) that "those who are going to announce a default to
Moldova should think hard about who has lead the country to it?"

In his words, with the help of those who began reforms 10 years ago, the
republic has become a beggar, a country where only mafiosi and corrupt
klans have been created "which we now come across at every corner".

Presently, Moldova's external debts are standing at $800 million, and
with an account of the energy indebtedness -- over $1.3 billion. Mr
Voronin believes the IMF and WB should assume a part of foreign credits
on themselves.

He emphasized the republic had observed all the three IMF memoranda
precisely.

"Chisinau had such a thrilling, anxious attitude to the Memoranda which
had never been even to resolutions of the CPSU Central Committee in
former decades. There has never been such a servility like the one
Moldova had been showing to international financial organizations."

The Moldovan President maintains there is only one way out -- to rely on
own forces.

"All these credits and fabulous promises pursue only one goal -- to
further tie the republic down."

Asked whether Moldova is pedalling back from the idea to join the
Russia-Belarus Union, Voronin replied such a union does not exist even
between Moscow and Minsk, as it has not yet settled as such, "so it is
necessary to study this question yet."
