It's strange that you are not seeing the problem
hard drive behaving slowly when using Linux.
But then I think the smartmontools long test will just
test internal to the drive, and not actually test
transfer of data over the SATA

I think it strange also. Maybe I'll run up the system rescue CD again and
perform a 'badblocks' on the drive.
But then I think the

I'm going to boot into the system rescue CD and run a destructive bad blocks
test on that particular drive. It will probably take overnight being a 1TB

Presumably you have checked that and it's not showing any errors.
So when the hard drive responds, it's giving good data.
But sometimes, it's very slow to respond.
I would say that

chassis is subject to unusual vibration which interfers with drive
operation. You would have to physically swap

..or not, since the mailing list software refuses to recognise my
