Seems obvious to me. The limitation in most configurations is the fuzziness
of the shadow, which also implies that size doesn't improve precision.
If this is true, then one second

Assuming that the fuzziness of the shadow is not a limiting factor for
maximum size, because you can get precise readings using the fuzz zone's
center, then a huge

Hello Nit Picking Old Timers:
Roger states what we have all thought to be true, that as the
style recedes from the sundial face, the shadow's edge becomes fuzzy which
limits the degree of precision attainable. This effect is most noticible on
large sundials.
Greetings wonderful dialers all !
Regarding Phil Pappas suggestion that the true shadow point is in the
center of the prenumbra, I still have doubts.
I haven't had time to make a shadow sharpener to see if the point is in the
perceived center or not, but in the meantime, I was wondering if

Hello Roger,
Any thoughts on how one should calculate solar coordinates to be most

this topic has come up yet) on using

Hello Charles all others:
You're right, the fuzz zone is the prenumbra, not the umbra. (mia culpa)
It seems that we are in agreement that the center of the preumbra is the
place where the shadow of the style's edge would be if the sun were a point
light source, and that this point can be
Hello Charles and all,
I tried your Shadow Sharpener test today and was amazed at the result. I
now see that the small hole acts as the lens of a pinhole camera
projecting the image of the sun onto a plane. I took a piece of cardboard
and punctured a series of holes of different diameters. About
