Richard,

Do a dmesg | more and look for a mention of your zip drive there. If it's
not there, then you will not be able to mount it. 

You probably should recompile your kernel for your zip drive. Mine works
perfectly. (old pp 100MB external zip)

In the 2.2.x kernels, (for the old pp zips at least), under scsi, you
activate a couple of things, esp. the specific item for the iomega zip
drive you have. All this is in the make menuconfig process.

There are some excellent zip howto's out there.
