Crews are working to contain a 1000 litre canola oil spill in a southern
Sydney river.
Fire and Rescue NSW and a HAZMAT unit were called to the Georges River
in Sylviana Waters on Friday morning after a container of oil being
carried on a fork lift broke and spilled into a drain which flows into
the Gwawley Oval Canal and through to Gwawley Bay.
Although some of the oil was spilled at the Taren Point work site, 900
litres entered the drainage system, according to Sutherland Shire Council.
Fire and Rescue and council have put water protection booms in place and
believe they have contained the spill, according to a spokeswoman for
the agency.

However, "a significant amount of oil is in the water", according to
Sutherland Shire Mayor, Cr Carmelo Pesce and response teams, including
the NSW Environmental Protection Authority, are working to clean up the
spill and reduce its impact on marine and bird life.
"I expect the cost of the clean up operation to be high and this will be
passed on to the company involved," Cr Pesce said.
