Still being addressed but there are some additives available that make it a
useful fuel down to well below freezing temps.

viability and sustainability of biodiesel as a market.

Endsnip

The whole thing, in my view, comes down to the realization that biodiesel
one of a broad range of renewable energy technologies that will have to be
developed to substitute for fossil fuels over time. We should also be
cognizant that the diesel, and internal combustion, will eventually be
replaced and that biodiesel is a good interim fuel. It will take its place
in niche markets and as a low percentage blend with low sulphur diesel (as
little as .1% added to diesel is an excellent lubricity additive.) Its
economic viability will depend on process technology and feedstock prices
and sources.

The sustainability of biodiesel is wholly dependent on the co-evolution of
"factor 10" thinking, that is, that to make use of available renewable
resources we must become many times more efficient in energy use.

It is often said that biodiesel could never replace the tremendous amount of
fossil diesel used. This is supposed to be anargument against their
development. But fossil fuel is finite.

Therefore, that argument against biodiesel fails - in fact it should serve
to trigger the realization that the status quo of use huge quantities of
fossil diesel is not sustainable, desirable or acceptable. Attempts to
replace the endowment of fossil fuel with similar amounts of alternative
fuels misses the point that conservation and efficiency and lifestyle and
consumption choices are, in fact, part of the picture that needs to be
examined. We need to take a "sustainable system design" view and see where
biodiesel, and diesels, fit into that, not examine elements of systems in
isolation.
