The world all-time list at the mile in the end of 1955:
3.58.0 J Landy, AUS 1954
3.58.8 R Bannister, AUS 1954
3.59.0 L Tabori, HUN 1955
3.59.8 C Chataway, GBR 1955
3.59.8 B Hewson, GBR 1955
4.00.5 W Santee, USA 1955
4.01.4 G Hägg, SWE 1945
4.01.4 R Seaman, USA 1955
4.01.6 A Andersson, SWE 1944
One small comment. At the time, 0.2 of a second was demanded (rounding up).
Landy's actual time was 3:57.9 (as you'll find it these days in every
historical list).
hence Wesbury Santee's 4:00.5 is also convertible into 4:00.6 under the
rules of those years. I think 1955 or 1956 actually saw the

There are 3 different types of heavy chains or isoforms: I, IIa, and IIx.
The type I isoform is referred
to as a slow fiber and the IIa and IIx isoforms are called fast fibers.
it seems that through a weight training regiment, some fast IIx fibers are
converted to IIa fibers.
