The glasses are rose-tinted but Steve Ovett was the one who, when he crossed
the finish line at the Olympic Games, wrote I love you to his girlfriend
in the air with his finger and made the workingmen's clubs of England wince.
All it would take is money. An extra set of mats and a computer to read the
signals could be placed anywhere on the course. You'd have to wait for
enough runners to pass the split to get a score, of course.

I believe that this has already been done to an extent. I seem to remember
that when nationals were held at Furman a couple of years back, Doug Padilla
had a system in place at the 1/2 point that showed which team was ahead
(team scores) and it was transmitted to the scoreboard. I also seem to
I'd like to hear the lists thoughts on the whole rabbit issue now that
another marathon (in Greece) has been won by one:

If the pace of the rabbit is known ahead of time, I don't see how there
could possibly be a gripe on the part of the other competitors if they
choose not to hang with the lead. If they do hang with the rabbit and get
outkicked or outlasted, that it would seem the rabbit was the superior
athlete
We have talked about this on the list many times (check the archives if
you are interested). I'd say opion is about 90% in favor of the rabbit
retaining the win and anyone who complains is a big baby. A rabbit is
hired to run a certain pace to a certain point. I've never heard of a

Each set of mats boxes cost $75,000. There are many races that use a set
at different spots, however. The Michigan High School State Championships
are all run at Michigan Speedway get splits at the 1 2 mile points.

Over the years I can remember a number of rabbits who led all the way and
won the race. They ran the pace they were supposed to run, but no one
followed. The rabbits did their job and decided to hang in the race because
no one was on the pace with them! they deserved to win and earned their
