t-and-f: AOY - French version

2003-01-02 Thread Robert Hersh
As an interesting postscript to our recent AOY thread, I thought I'd pass along the results of the 2002 Champion of Champions poll of the editorial staff of the French sports daily, L'Equipe. In spite of his Tour de France exploits, Lance Armstrong was only tied for eighth with Serena Williams.

I'm surprised he made the list at all. According to the SI AOY article about Lance, the French generally have a very low opinion of him. He gets jeered as he rides by in the French countryside. They view his achievements as impossible without drugs, therefore he must be a cheating doper.

Where did Greg LeMond ever finish on the L'Equipe list? The French liked him even less. But at least a great track accomplishment was recognized, but interesting that there is no Paula or marathoners at all (or is that the bottom 10 or 20 of the list?) The French do know where Chicago is; they

In 44 years, and perhaps 80-85,000 miles, of running, I had my share of encounters with jerks in cars. But a friend has the best story. He was running at night on a perimeter road around his Miami suburb housing development when a car with four young punks passed him and yelled some taunts.

When reading SI's Sportsman of the Year articles, I was struck by two items: - Three of the first five SOYs were track and field athletes. I forget when the last one won, but I think it may have been Mary Decker in 1983. - Armstrong is praised as being unique among cyclists to be training for

There is also a subset of drivers who will not cross the yellow line for any reason. I suspect that some of these people would blithely run over a person, dog, or tree just to make sure they don't edge into the wrong lane when there are no other cars in sight. Most of my road miles are in
