ETHIOPIA'S Gete Wami, last year's world 10,000 metres champion, has shocked
rivals with a last-minute entry for the 5,000m. The Ethiopian, who
outsprinted Paula Radcliffe to win over 5,000m in Seville last August,
decided to race close to the deadline for entries. The likelihood is that
Wami will join Ethiopian team-mates Ayelech Worku, last year's world 5000m
bronze medallist, and Worknesh Kidane in the final. The three Ethiopians are
sure to run as a team to upset the rhythm of Ireland's Sonia O'Sullivan and
last year's world 5,000m champion, Gabriela Szabo of Romania.

OF the 200,000 letters sent to the Australian team from fans, one in eight
are for the runner Cathy Freeman. Although the sprinter is yet to take a
stride in the 200m and 400m events she has already got 25,000 pieces of
mail.
