THE EARLY elimination in the heats of Diane Modahl in the 800 metres in
Sydney will come as no surprise to the British Olympic Association, who
managed to write off her chances before the Games even began.

A detailed schedule provided to the media by the BOA at the start of the
Games listed day-by-day details of all the British competitors in action.

In most cases, the Britons were pencilled in right up to their respective
finals - that is apart from Modahl, whose name disappeared from the schedule
after the opening round.

The BOA did manage to get one thing wrong, however. Triple-jumper Larry
Achike also vanished from the schedule after the opening qualifying round.

Yesterday Achike confounded expectations by leaping straight into the final
with a personal best jump of 17.30 metres - ahead of world record holder and
gold medal favourite Jonathan Edwards (17.08m).
