Surely all the swimming strokes bar the freestyle fall into the same
category..breaststroke or swimming backwards just isnt the quickest way to

I may as well start by citing the posting which comes closest
to identifying the original source (although we apparently still
have a bit to go).
It is the very essence of sport to create artificial impediments
and then conduct competitions subject to those impediments.
Trivia time.
Go easy on the walkers. Not the fastest moving sport in the world, but they
are moving forwards. I can think of three sports (incl. 2 Olympic sports)
where the winners go backwards.
