NEW YORK -- Bernard Lagat felt so good running through Central Park
this week, he knew American hopeful Alan Webb and the rest of the
field in the Wanamaker Mile would hardly stand a chance against him.

With precision and ease, the top-ranked Kenyan easily beat his
competitors at the Millrose Games on Friday night, cruising to victory
in 3 minutes, 52.87 seconds, setting meet and Madison Square Garden
records.

Webb huffed and puffed trying to keep up, but only fell farther back,
showing he still has plenty of work to do to compete with the best.
Laban Rotich was second in 4:00.33, while Webb finished third in
4:00.91. Lagat took a victory lap to a standing ovation from the
cheering crowd of 13,519.

RALEIGH, North Carolina, Feb 4 - Kenyan Olympic silver medallist
Bernard Lagat streaked to the fastest mile run in Madison Square
Garden when he clocked three minutes, 52.87 seconds at the Millrose
Games in New York on Friday.

The time was also the fastest in the world this year.

Lagat's blistering early pace put him nearly a half a lap ahead of the
field and he went on to finis more than seven seconds ahead of
countryman Laban Rotich.

U.S. Olympian Alan Webb was third.

"It was one of the greatest miles I've been in," Lagat said. "I felt
strong. I told the guy (the pacemaker), keep on pushing, keep on
moving.

"I wanted to run (the record) because 3:52 is not easy."

The time broke Algerian Noureddine Morceli's Madison Square Garden
best of 3:52.99 set in 1992.
