In the Netherlands most new streetbikes are equiped with a wheelhub
dynamo which solves your annoyances: no noise, no noticable resistance.
And another plus: they're always enabled, so instant light in a tunnel
(with a light sensor in your headlight).

German C't Magazine had an article a couple of months ago about how to
keep a PDA/GPS charged with a hub dynamo while cycling. They basically
showed you how to construct a buffer battery and electronics for it,
