The problem in Jackson County NC is that the name field in the TIGER featnames table contains abbreviations. For example, Mountain is shown as Mtn. There are 227 individual names with the Mtn abbreviation. My guess is there are other counties with similar problems. I'm not sure how to run a query

In Alaska the Boroughs and CPDs are the equivalent of counties. I recently cleaned up much of the Canada/Alaska border and in the process looked at the counties data. I have come to the conclusion that it is better and easier to remove the existing counties data and reimport from TIGER 2012.
