Version 10 works, but you have to jump through some hoops with a web browser when you first add a gmail address to The Bat. Unless you actually need to send from a gmail address, you can fix retrieval of mail at www.gmail.com and forwarding everything (and delete from Google servers afterwards) to an e-mail address on a domain that doesn't break every e-mail client on the planet.
