Right. I was doing it your way and it _was_ a pain (but
admittedly a minor one). What I saw in the context menu when
right clicking on the Message To: was two choices: Write a
message to this address, and Reply to this address. I got to
thinking that it would be just as easy to provide a choice to
either Write a message to all addressees, or Reply to all
addressees. It's not a critical thing, but when there is more
than one procedure to do, there's a possibility for error to be
introduced. I can cope without it, but I do like Miguel's idea of
using Edit as New. If I'm going to err, I'd rather it be the
subject line than the address positions. It seems cleaner
somehow. Thanks for your input, it gave me a chance to review
again what I was doing. :-)

Well I do that too. But over here it is not much work, because I highlight the
whole CC line and then copy and paste, and do the same with the BCC line. This
is two c actions, I don't find that too many.

It's a good idea. It has the advantage of only needing to select
the previous text and subject then type over them, much faster
than copying and pasting... I could even change the hotkey to
something more convenient than Alt+F6. Thanks!

As a workaround, you may select the message and, form the top menu
Message, select 'Edit as new'. A new editor window will open with the
To, CC and BCC fields properly filled. However, you will have to edit
the Subject, if it is different, and obviously the text of the message.

Automatic indentation does not happen for myself with the plain text editor,
but I wouldn't expect it there anyway. It also does not happen if I
exceptionally change to HTML editor in my attempt at reproducing the problem.

It does help, Thanks. It seems I was confusing myself (easily done these days)
and didn't realize that the sig I was looking at in my previous reply to Maggie
was the sig which is in my TB reply template. If my cut mark really didn't

When I look at Stuart's message from a couple of days ago, his
sig looks perfect at my end. There is no mention of an ad for
whatever virus program which normally has a cut line. The same
for Acheton's message. Jack's shows the derangement and there is
a double cut line in his sig. However, like yours, Mike's doesn't
seem to have a double cut line, but his sig is showing as broken
here as well. A mystery!

I think I need someone to define the purpose of the cut mark because I thought
it was to automatically eliminate everything below the cut mark (including the
cut mark) when replying. When I clicked REPLY to this email Mike, your cut mark
and everything below it is visible.

For what it's worth, my editor is automatically set to Plain Text(MicroEd)
whenever I communicate with this list. Somewhere in the distant past it was
recommended to use Plain Text(MicroEd) for this list.

Concerning your sig file, I had the same problem it wasn't being recognised the two dashes were there but the space was missing. I was creating my sig files in HTML mode which failed I found using plain text to create the sig all was well again. It always used to work in HTML but a while back it stopped working. I just selected all my sig file and then selected plain text and it seemed to work. Hope this helps Jack.

Hmmm, very interesting. When I reply to this (your) email, I'm replying with
your email quoted in the my reply. Your entire sig appears, cut mark, Warmest
regards etc. If I "select" (highlight) your cut mark, the highlight stops after
the two dashes. It does not stop after the trailing dash as you would expect
indicating that the trailing space is not there. This is what prompted me to
remark on it in the first place.

However, since this email also contains my original email to you, my sig is
displayed also which means mine didn't work either. If I try to select
(highlight) my cut mark. It will highlight the two dashes but not the trailing
space. Actually since my sig appears in the first place it would indicate that
my cut mark doesn't work also. And I *know* my cut mark is dash, dash, space.
It would seem that TB is stripping the trailing space on our cut marks thereby
rendering them inoperative. Or I've totally misconstrued the function of the cut
marks in the first place.

Hi Thomas,

Thanks for the reply, it appears that this only happens when I am replying to
an email which is wider than the screen, at which points it goes outside of the
bounds of the window - which makes some sense.

Let me try to write a very long line because I have never experienced what you
are describing. I usually use HTML/Plaintext but this time I am using HTML
only. Maybe that makes the difference - no, it doesn't. At the end of the
screen, the text continues here on the next line. Let me try to change the size
of the window - nope, it still breaks (softbreak) the lines at the end of the
window and continues in the next line. Resizing to full size changes changes
the softbreaks as desired.

In short, I cannot duplicate your problem.

If somebody wants a dark background for the folder list because they find a
light background too glaring for their eyes, my guess is the same applies to
the message list. I have used colour groups to give a dark background to these
lists for many years, although I do have specific colour groups that I use just

That is just a 'nasty' workaround that does change the background
color of the folder tree pane if the color group for each folder is
Generic, and it does also affect the message list.

Thanks, but I know that. I want to change the background color of the account

I can change it in the message viewer, but can't find where to change the
background of the various parts of the window otherwise (if possible).

Thanx. It has been even simpler than that, I made a couple of attempts and I
can't remember the exact steps. I run the setup selecting the previous folder
and setting the same encription password, then it let me choose the main mail
folder, after that all came back. It seems that I lost just a few
configuration details, nothing important.

Once you point to a copy of your mail folder on the first run of The Bat! you
should be prompted with a list of the accounts found in the folder, so just
select the accounts you wish to work with and that's it :-)

I believe Outlook uses Microsoft CryptoAPI to manage S/MIME and TLS
certificates. TB! is more flexible because you have the additional
option of using the internal implementation.

The error message you reported seeing in your July 2014 thread was
about the server not providing a root certificate during the session,
and there being no root certificate in your address book. This new
error message is reporting a different issue.

Compare the actual host name with the host name given in the
certificate, work out what is different, then change one to match the
other.

My previous advice was given when you were saying it was the exact
same issue and the same error message as three years ago.

Now that you report a different problem, that advice is not relevant.

Click the Windows start button (or press the Windows key), type
certmgr.msc in the box and press enter. If it's not clear from there,
ask a search engine how to add a certificate to "windows certificate
store".

The issue is just as I had explained in my original thread some years

Unfortunately TB makes it more difficult to deal with this than
other clients like outlook.

The error message is always like this:

!28/08/2017, 22:03:54: FETCH - TLS handshake failure. The server host
name ("xyz.somewhere.com") does not match the certificate.

I tried the first suggestion via address book several times but
really am not clear what I need to import there. Is it the geotrust
root certificate that is missing or do I need to add my new Quick SSL
certificate? I tried both without much happiness. And how would I
add something to the cryptoAPI?

I take it you create a self-signed certificate and submit it to
GeoTrust for them to add their signature.

Assuming you are using TB!'s internal implementation to manage S/MIME
and TLS certificates rather than the Windows certificate store, you
could try the following:-

In The Bat!, click the Tools menu on the top of the screen, and
select Address Book.

Click View and select Certificate Address Books.

Right-click Trusted Root CA and select New Contact from the
context menu.

Type the name of the CA in First name field.

Select the Certificates tab and click Import

Locate the root certificate you downloaded from the CA, then
select the file and click Open.

Once the root certificate is imported, click OK to apply changes
and exit the Address Book.

Or you could see if switching to Windows certificate store (Microsoft
CryptoAPI) side-steps the issue for you. (If it doesn't, either the
root certificate needs adding there too, or a missing root certificate
is not the problem.)

Again I am getting the same error messages after having updated the
annual self-signed certificate purchased from geotrust.
I have tried to import the root certificate but I probably need better
advice - perhaps last time I was lucky because this time I am stuck
and after 3 years I can't remember all the steps.

It's the other way round, sort of. Problem is that autocompletion in the To:
field doesn't make use of the Addresses tab list, and I can't understand where
it picks addresses from and using what criteria.

Isn't that tab controlled by the settings in Options | Preferences |
Address History? Maybe the "Do-Not-Track List" or "Scan folders for
more addresses" buttons hide something that will help. When I was
poking around with such things several years ago, I added *@ to the
"Do-Not-Track List". I don't know if it helps, and these days I tend
to just ignore the bizarre address suggestions (I am stuck with
Outlook at work, so I get far worse there).

Ok, finally the unwanted address seems to be gone from the autocomplete
suggestions, after these operations:

- I deleted from the message base any message with that address in the header.
- I completely emptied the Addresses tab (right click on the addresses list /
purge + empty address history)
- I deleted all the addresses in the drop down list of the To: field (double
down arrow at the right of the To: field).
- I completely deactivated all the options in Preferences / Address history
- I did a purge+compact operation in the manteinance center

I don't know which step actually did the trick.

My question now: is there any option to feed the suggestions of the
autocomplete function in the To: field only with entries from the Addresses
tab list? That would be really useful.

Unfortunately not. The unwanted address doesn't appear at all in the list when
I use the double down arrow, it shows up only when I start typing part of the
name of the adressee in the to: field. I can't understand where it has been
memorized.

I am sorry, but I cannot answer most of your questions, as I am myself
struggling through these things. That message with the PGP
keyblock even wasn't correct; the signature macro should not
be visible. In fact, I don't know really how to create a predefined

how really to call the footer file with the text and keyblock. It was
in the message by unexpected luck, but I did not know how I did it.

That etiquette seems to have been 'disappeared'; at least, many
messages I get, both private and commercial have big footers of
different kind. Some with lots of text, others with pictures.

Thank you for bringing this question to the group. I have been
following this thread avidly since I have never understood the
PGP and related encryption methods and I have some questions and
an observation.

1. I largely use text and not html to communicate. Using GnuPG
seems to take up lots of space. Do I remember correctly that
proper email etiquette advocated no more than 6 lines in a sig,
or, is that just a piece of the past that just stuck in my
memory?

2. How will correspondents using smart phones manage this
considering the screen size?

3. For correspondents who don't use a dedicated email program
such as TheBat! handle this if they are using web mail?

4. When replying without trimming in an email thread, this could
potentially take to not only scroll through, but to even find the
actual email amidst all the other security characters?

5. Are these questions also relevant to PGP or only GnuPG?

Isn't choosing VPN more effective w/o having to use the keys and
the added issue of having to convince other people to adopt this
system in order to communicate with me? These are the ones who
say, why should I do this, I've got nothing to hide?

How do I import a root certificate.

It's several years since I needed to do this, and my memory of it is
unclear. I think you set up an address book entry, import the
certificate into that AB entry, view the certificate, go to the
certification path tab, select the certificate you want to trust,
 and click add to trusted.

I played about with self-certificates quite a few years ago, and just
for email, not TLS. And I have had to import new root certificates a
few times, when email service providers changed server certificates
and when correspondents had s/mime certificates from a CA that was not
already there or had expired. So no great wealth of experience on my
 part.

Thank you very much - yes, the critical issue was that I had to import
the Geotrust Global CA first. Once I had done that, our self-signed
certificate was fully validated.

I'm slightly confused. This suggests that after creating your
self-signed certificate, you then got it signed by Geotrust Global CA.

Importing (and trusting) the root certificates of all the CAs in the
world would not validate a certificate that was signed only by itself
and not by a CA.

Eureka !!! No, I did not, and somehow never had noticed that setting

(LOL) with a couple of spam messages (and they're real spam messages, not
mis-filtered or mis-directed desired mail messages, but they're good for

When I started with TB! my recollection is that it automatically
picked whatever matching key was found first. Then I am convinced it
was changed in an upgrade to present the user with a list if there
were multiple matches; I don't think it was a setting the user could
affect. I'm sure I used to sometimes see this. But I just tested with
a couple of email addresses for which I have more than one key on my
keyring, and TB! didn't prompt me which key to use. In my very limited
test, TB! seemed to be automatically using the oldest key for
encryption and the newest key for signing.

As far as I remember, it was unreliable and only sometimes offered me
the choice. But I don't recall hearing anybody say it had been changed
back to TB! picking one itself.

I've been using TB! since v2.x in 2004 and never been able to find a
setting, or even a workaround, to achieve this. I'm sure somebody will
chime in if a newer TB! version than mine can do this.

Since you used the abbreviation TB (without an exclamation mark) I
have to ask if you were thinking of Thunderbird, where the Enigmail
add-on does provide such a setting (per-recipient rules).

For example, I have a friend who has a few Public keys,
here in the keyring. I only want to use certain one.

If several public keys have user-ids containing the email address to
which you are sending, TB! should be presenting you with a dialogue
box to choose one for encryption every time you send them an email.

If you want to always use the same one and not get that dialogue box,
you could disable the others in GnuPG or PGP.

If the friend has several keys but does not have their email address
in any user-ids, in GnuPG you can create a group line naming the group
as the email address surrounded by angle-brackets and pointing to the
key you want to use for encryption. (Some PGP versions have a way of
achieving the same thing, some do not.)

I'd like the $SIGNCOMPLETE to make use of my
 preferences.

I think it would be more sensible if they added this functionality to
%encryptcomplete, and the option of choosing which of the sender's
keys to use for signing to %signcomplete.

I think in the past there have been wish-list entries requesting such
a function (or/and an addressbook field to set the key to use).

If I recall correctly, Gmail only exhibits this bug if your outgoing
mail goes through their server. Sending through a different SMTP
server (like your ISP's, or direct from your own PC, or using one of
the other free services available) makes it work properly: if Google
didn't record your message-id on the way out, they can't use it to
censor your message when it comes back in.

I also just did a quick spot of searching on Google's self-help forum
and the recurring theme is that they do not provide a setting to turn
off this bug. They mention filters and labels, but I don't recall
those working for their POP server, just their web interface. And even
if it worked, you would get a copy of your sent message, not the
incoming one via the group with the added headers.

Not sure if CC or BBC to yourself would work, or whether google would
censor that incoming copy as well.

Or you could subscribe to the list with two different addresses, using
one to send and the other to receive. On that note, any idea if the
@thebat.net email joint offering by Ritlabs and google is still
around?

sluggishness normal? And does anybody have a better workaround?

Workaround:-

In Wine's Program Files directory, create a symlink GnuPG to the
Windows folder where gpg.exe and iconv.dll reside. Add that location
to Wine's PATH environment variable as C:\Program Files\GnuPG.

(To avoid duplicating my GnuPG keyrings and configuration files for

user1\Application Data directory to the corresponding Windows
location.)
