Re: One more Jaws website query

2012-08-03 Thread Chris Moore
Gordon,

JAWS (and NVDA too for that matter) have the ability to scrape a page and look
for content that is not usually accessible to the screen reader and then makes
it become accessible.

For example you have a application which has labelled buttons, and I mean a
sighted person can see the text on those buttons, but the screen reader reads
the button as button. JAWS is able to perform an OCR and make those buttons
readable.

This feature is particularly useful when watching a DVD. Currently menus on
DVDs are not accessible, JAWS fixes that problem.

These are just a couple of examples.

I would love to see this feature added to voiceover, but as Apple like to jump
onto the spring years of technology, I can't see them adopting DVD OCR as DVDs
are in the autumn years of their life and will eventually be fully replaced
with streaming / downloads.

JAWS 13 has some very interesting features, especially when using the text
analyser with MS Word.

I have still not found a way for JAWS to tell me if I have incorrectly spelt a
word after hitting the spacebar which I have taken for granted on the Mac.
Mind you, I am still on XP at work and using office 2003, so that might have a
baring.

Re: One more Jaws website query

2012-08-03 Thread Gordon Smith
Hi Chris

OK, I've discovered that if I use the FTP download link for Jaws using a PC, it
reads very differently for one thing to how it does with VoiceOver. For a
start, the downloads are labelled Demo which VoiceOver doesn't see. For
seconds, the FTP downloads work, which they do not in Safari 6. That, if it
holds true for all FTP downloads, is a huge hole in Safari, just like the
removal of RSS is in Safari 6.

I'll shortly be installing Jaws, but one thing I do not like from what I saw of
the installer last time. It automatically, and without giving the user the
option to change it, evokes System Restore to create a restore point. That is
really ugly as far a
as I'm concerned. We don't use System Restore at all, in preference to
RollBack which is far more powerful.

But the text access features sound interesting. I'll get Jaws 64-bit install
on our Windows 7 Notebook shortly and see how it goes.
