For example: surely sometimes you had both GNOME and XFCE installed and
went for menus to open - say

tried for about an hour to do something with an non-existent fd0, then
failed to install onto the partition's boot sector. unfortunately, this

The 8xx series is, I think, not supported for Shell - you should get the
'classic GNOME' fallback - but basic boot and GDM and the 'classic' mode
should all work. File a bug for any KMS issues.

nomodeset in Rawhide (actually, since F13 or so) does not run intel
without KMS; it just gets you vesa. The bug report's fine, but just
so you know :) Only the radeon driver has a UMS component any more,
and that only for old chipsets. nouveau and intel only do KMS now.

Depends on when the start stops.
You may try serial console, dracut rdshell...
