The answer is "no". I wrote my own batch script. And I did include a "del *.mx1"

As an aside, I don't have gsview on this computer but I do have Acrobat
distiller and Acrobat and in fact it is set up so that double clicking on a .ps
or just opening it from inside acrodist causes acrodist to create a pdf. So I
put that in as the last step in the batch file, but acrodist refuses to exit
gracefully when run from a command prompt, so there are several extra clicks
and keystrokes required.

Thanks for the responses. It's still a puzzle. I was definitely getting
unrecorded space with the tremtest file, but now it's gone away. I'm on the
road and working in a new setup on a secondary computer. There might have been
some residual .mx? files floating around somewhere.

Both compile OK for me. Which version of musixtex are you
using?

If you mean that the barline in tremtest.pdf after the third measure is
more to the right, that is because the flag on the note protrudes
past the notehead whereas in space.pdf it does not.

I don't get any TeX diagnostics when processing either. musixtex.log
looks like this:

This is musixtex.lua version 0.16e.
  etex space.tex
  musixflx space
  etex space.tex
  dvips -e0 space
  ps2pdf space.ps
space.pdf generated by ps2pdf.
  removing space.mx1
  removing space.mx2
  removing space.dvi
  removing space.ps
  removing space.log
