I read many similar things before I went to Malaysia. However, in my
experience, durian has a strong odor, but it was not all that unpleasant, as
far as I was concerned. I have wondered if there were different varieties
that differed in their unpleasantness. I tried them in peninsular Malaysia

Yes. Many times. I taught in Bangkok as part of my sabbatical in summer
200O. The whole family ate Durian many times.
The smell - as you walk by Durian merchants - is not pleasant (for some
reason they slice one open for all to see/smell (?). However, I do not
think that the smell is as horrible
