Once again it is time to start thinking about casting your vote for the
1998 Darwin Award winner! As you may already know, the Darwin Awards are true
stories for those nominees who contribute to the gene pool by dying in
spectacularly stupid ways before they breed (thankfully). The 1998 nominees
Jean Edwards asked about a story that Joyce Brothers was tossed out of
the APA for an ethical infraction, and Jim Matiya then asked:
Where's Stephen Black when we need him.
I can't resist flattery but the fact is that I know nothing about
Joyce Brothers other than I watched her on the TV
Paul asked:
Of course, that does raise an interesting question. Does the nonfoveated
information make it into the sensory registers? Does some of it? What
determines exactly what part of the visual field makes it into the
registers?

Thanks to all of you who responded to my request about information on
briefer General Psy. texts. The following texts were mentioned.
Several of you also pointed out that some publishers offer customized
publishing; texts mentioned for this were Rathus, Sternberg, Santrock,
and Matlin.

In regard to the discussion of Sperling's study, does anyone know what
ever became of him? The study is such a classic in cognitive psychology,
but I have never seen his name mentioned anywhere else. (Of course, this
could be due to the fact that I am not a cognitive psychologist.) Th reason

He was at NYU until the early 90s (he was gone by the time I got
there in 1993) then he and his wife Barbara Dosher went to UC Irvine.
He is still quite in vision research. Pretty impressive
considering the work he is best known for outside of vision was
done 40 years ago.

George Sperling is, in fact, still quite an active researcher. My directories
list him at the University of California at Irvine. He had a paper at the
November Psychonomic Society on "Measuring the amplification factor of
attention to color." His interests seem to be directed more toward

An experiment somewhat similar to the one Pat describes has been done (a

use a partial report procedure used by Sperling. Instead, he looked at

Jim (and the rest of us)
I'd like to point out, as gently as possible, that perhaps we are engaging
in a bit of unprofessional behavior. Though Dr. Brothers has certainly
crossed the line into public life and, in my mind at least,
Hi all,
For the last several semesters, I've been doing a "psychic"
demonstration (reading through sealed envelopes -- Another one of
those handy TIPS suggestions!) to get students into hypothesis
testing, which is then followed by discussion of independent and
dependent variables.

Can anyone recommend a text that reviews some of the central issues that psychology has
been grappling with but does so at reasonable length. Issues can be either primarily
pphilosophical-psychological or scientific-psychological, preferably an integration
of both.

Sure, after you've picked your card, when they show you the next set of cards none of
the new cards are the old ones, thus the one you picked is not there either. Cute
game.
TIPSters,
I've stayed mute on the subject of Joyce Brothers, but it's
really beginning to trouble me that the posts make TIPS sound
petty and gossipy. The accusations and allegations about her
may not be true at all, yet we're jumping from "I heard..." to
"How could she do that?" To accuse a
