An ex-student who attends a college in this area is very upset
that they misspelled the word Psychology (Psyhology) on the
Psychology building. She is re-evaluating her application to grad
school there.

So what do you do when students are acting like children: passing notes
in class, having private conversations, doodling in notebooks, sleeping,
and so forth?
Stop lecturing till the behavior ceases. And call out the names of
students exhibiting the inappropriate behaviors.
