Re: [ Ubuntu-BD ] installing hardy direct from ISO

2008-06-03 Thread Russell John
Can you try deleting that directory from shell? cd to the upper level and try:

sudo rm -rf NFS\ Underground/

Let me know what happens.

 Thanks Russell Bhai.

I installed Hardy by CD and afterwards manually deleted the files that
had the virus from my NTFS drive, so it turned out okay.

I have another problem though: There is a NFS Underground folder on
the NTFS drive that appears empty both on Windows and in Ubuntu. When
I try deleting through Ubuntu, I get an error message.

I ran a Sophos anti-rootkit through Windows for the drive, and the
program could identify some game files as being hidden in that folder,
but could not identify as being any rootkit virus or restore them. Its
taking up a couple of hundred Megabytes on my hard disk, so any
 suggestions would be appreciated

Hardy comes with ntfs-3g by default and as my friend tells me,
read/write is no longer a problem. Try it and let us know your
 experience. :)

 russell bhai,

Sorry I didn't reply earlier. My downloaded ISO was corrupt and I
didnt get around to installing hardy for a while. But I just tried
this method with a new ISO download.

Unfortunately this method did not work like a cd install and after
showing a few things not found, booted into an initramfs she'll. I
don't know what next to do through here, so I've rebooted to my feisty
and will burn a cd now.

I really need ntfs writing now, as the windows drives have got a nasty
rootkit virus file that avast detects, kaspersky blocks, but neither
 can remove.

Here comes Hardy on my pc.

Hi Ammar bhai, nice to hear from you. Hope you're doing well.

You can try the same way you did it on Mandriva. I'm describing the
process below, though I don't guarantee it to work. Try it and let me
know if it worked or not.

 1) Create a new directory where the ISO file will be mounted:
 sudo mkdir /mnt/hardy

 2) Let's mount it:
 mount -t iso9660 -o ro,loop ubuntu-8.04-desktop-i386.iso /mnt/hardy

 3) Now copy the kernel and initrd images from /mnt/hardy and copy them
to /boot (file names: vmlinuz and initrd.gz)

 4) Now edit the bootloader. I'm assuming that you're using GRUB, but
if you use LILO, then let me know.
 sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst
 or
 sudo vi /boot/grub/menu.lst

 Add the following:

 title Hardy Install
 kernel (hd0,0)/boot/vmlinuz
 initrd (hd0,0)/boot/initrd.gz

 5) Reboot your system and choose Hardy Install from the boot menu.

Let me know if it works or not.

Its better to format the drive from windows.. if you would like to keep it
for WIN... else format it on ubuntu.

And I got that too...

why partitioning is the first thing that pops up in your mind???

you have a headache try medicine first then consider cutting your head off
:P

I would recommend first trying to delete those files using RJs Method or
through Root Access.

if that fails you may recommend Formating the partition...

 I actually agree with this...

first try to remove files by using what RJ have said.. then try root
 access.

Because formating the drive will mean loss of all data... this should be
 the last method
