i agree i was going to post this myself as a bug/missed feature. since
we aren't going to use xscreensaver anymore we should have functionality
in gnome screensaver that would allow it to detect when a xscreensaver
application wants the screensaver not to be disabled (e.g. gmplayer).

I just did an upgrade, and though I've now switched to experimenting with
ntfs-3g, the experimental driver which will be merged into ntfs-progs, the
problem is the same. What's interesting is, that once I restarted after the
upgrade (which included a new kernel), the HAL demon failed to start.
If the -26 kernel should be the default kernel of Dapper.1, then yes,
this should be a blocker, as this kernel is unusable for me and it seems
quite some more people.
If, however, the -25 kernel is default: Then go ahead with Dapper.1.
My 2 cents.

After installing the latest Linux kernel
This is a nasty bug. I have not recommended Ubuntu to many of my
friends because of this install/liveCD bug. Many other distro's also
have this problem. The only one that I have used lately that doesn't is
SuSe 10.1. Trying safe graphics doesn't help. The only way to install
is in text mode.
I have tracked down the bug and submitted the patch to gnome-bugs
#171938. This is my first patch ever and I'm rather curious how things
go on from here :)
