I tested the 27/09 daily build.
I have a P5B and the CD and Harddrive are both on the IDE channel drived
by the JMicron
The CD is now correctly detected, the harddrive also, the files are copied on
the harddrive,
all is OK until the installation finishes and the PC reboot.

I cannot see an error in your Xorg.0.log except error opening security
policy file /usr/lib/xserver/SecurityPolicy, which is a remnant of
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=362246
seems similar to bug # 44370 , but that one has a fatal error. leaving
as needsinfo [couldn't triage]
FWIW, I cannot get any oops with either the -8 or the -10 kernel.

This is not a bug. The words we use to describe to Ubuntu were chosen

note: a widespread remnant of this bug on ubuntu is this string in
users' (mine included) Xorg.0.logs:
~$ cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep SecurityPolicy
error opening security policy file /etc/X11/xserver/SecurityPolicy
this is a file from xserver-common, not included with Ubuntu / Deb Unstable.
The patch does indeed build a proper cpio to use external setlocale().
Verified both on edgy and dapper.
I am proceeding now with tests.
Edgy: i386/ppc/sparc initramfs regeneration works fine (all machines booted
with that)
