I have the same issue too. I recently upgraded from dapper to edgy and
mysql refused to start. I too have intel 64 bit processor. It seems that
the problem is a architecture dependent one.

Have this problem too on a HP nx6125 laptop with an ATI 200m with both ati
and radeon as the driver.
Logout creates visual garbage on the screen. Switching to a text-console
creates the garbage too.
System is still responsive though and i can even use the text-console to
shutdown the laptop

On my quite fresh Egdy (update from Dapper), /etc/hosts is totally
ignored. I added alias names with a text editor and the gui editor and
checked it with the console host.
I also tried to disable dns lookups with /etc/nsswitch.conf, which is
also ignored.
