I've been ignoring the problem for a while because I don't reboot often,
but I finally decided to check the bug again to see if any progress was
happening.
I tried setting vga=ask, the kernel asks what vga mode you want and you're
allowed to make your choice while the screen is bright.

Since bug 118303 has been resolved, there is another tool you can use.
It is called blktrace and has a wrapper script called btrace that will
spit out a (mostly) human readable format of what processes are eating
your disk up.
Type mount to see what volumes / partitions you have mounted. Here is

from Inkscape then CD cover is enlarged and I must make it smaller -
about 11x11cm instead of 12x12 cm :(

No, it does not. In Ubuntu ooo is using system-libfreetype (upstream is
able to do so, too, but at least it had troubles with freetype =2.2).
It is rather related to the fact that upstream-ooo is ignoring
fontconfig-rendering-settings, e.g. if your system-libfreetype has
enabled
This is not a bug in Ubuntu. When a segmentation fault occurs, it is an
error in the program that is running, and Planeshift isn't an
application that is supported by Ubuntu. You'll need to forward this
bug report on to them.

I think the config is set to share on my system, and when I try to
connect locally I have no problems, but if another system (xp) tries to
connect, it gets a user/pw dialog.

I had the same problem.
I removed line 130 from /usr/share/websvn/filedetails.php
//$vars[repname] = htmlentities($rep-getDisplayName(), ENT_QUOTES, 'UTF-8');
and now it works.
