updating network manager clears my eth0 interface
this was probably a well known crash caused by a signal5 (assertion).
That particular issue is fixed in latest gutsy network-manager
0.6.5-0ubuntu15 or higher.

ok, ok - call me dumb.
finally got it to boot from safe graphics mode. But had to take this path a
number of times before it would complete a successful installation. Keep
getting a signal failure to the LCD monitor. The installation failed at various
stages. Was stubborn enough to keep trying
It looks like this also fixes it - I have not seen kde unlock dialog
since replacing /usr/bin/kdesktop_lock with this bash script

The workspaces number change is fixed, the other issue is due to compiz
and supposed to be fixed, reassigning there for comment though
