I suspect the 11 minutes minimum is coming from your
system-preferences-screensaver being set to 11 minutes; the figure
reported in the gnome power manager dialog seems to be offset by the
screensaver amount (even though it doesn't seem to be implemented like
that); I've reported a separate bug

I see this issue with Gusty, Hardy and other distros. Similar to the
original poster, my configuration for testing is:
Internal HDD: Not for Linux (yet)
External USB HDD: Install to here
Boot from the LiveCD/DVD. The internal drive is considered hd0, the
external drive is hd1. IMPORTANT
Live CD of Hardy alpha 4 works. Xorg reports intel driver being used
and the ch7017 chipset module present. Direct rendering active.
However xorg appears to fail occasionally after resuming from
screensaver. Not sure if this is related or a new bug to look into.

Well the thing is that the development focus is on Hardy. If this bug

I am having a similar issue with my HP dv6338se. After the initial
install, my xorg.conf is similar to the one that is posted by
linuxer101. Normally the install will detect the touchpad but it did
not find it this time. I ended up using my xorg.conf from Gutsy to make
it work.
