I installed the packages from hardy-proposed using aptitude but because
I had set up the libwfb.so link manually I don't think the packages
corrected it? Anyhow, I set them by hand as above. Note that I have no
/usr/lib/nvidia/libwfb* files at all (I did not touch anything in that
dir), so surely

You seem to have made this bug report public, but #194835 is not

Public bug reported:
When running mostly any fullscreen games from repos I get a lot of Sync
out of range errors. I have Nvidia installed with envyNG, my original
resolution is 1280x1024, this only happens with most of fullscreen mode
games. Somethig that has to do with the new xorg.conf.

Erk, ok thanks for letting me know swiftly. I've notified upstream to
revert the change.
The hardware change sounds pretty significant - from your diff it
appears the entire display has changed. Putting your old backed up os
on top of this hardware probably resulted in an incorrect config file
As I suggest in the FAQ, you should have uninstalled the driver from
Envy before you upgraded.
Type:
sudo envy --uninstall-all
The bug might affect the old envy since envyng-core works only on hardy.

that's not enough, since you've done things by hand. After removing the
link you need to reinstall xserver-xorg-core to get the real libwfb.so
from that package.
