Sorry but I have no time right now to investigate this issue further.
For me with unofficial driver I get most of the time coloured and
missaligned console window(rolled some pixels to the right so that first
n columns of pixels from the right side appear on the left side) but I
can use console.
I have tried to disable every plugin but the problem on bookmarks does not
disappear.
I think, like Art, that this kind of problem is a symptom of a real bug.
But I wonder why the number of users that have the same problem is so small.

Yes, it does
Ubuntu (as well as other distros) still use the system speaker if something
unexpected happens.
Why isn't this changed? The system speaker sounds ugly, and people expect to
hear sound from the speakers connected through the sound card.
