At first I was experiencing the same error. Then i decided to try it
with amd-v enabled. Turns out my bios didn't support it, so I flashed it
with a new version, turned on amd-v and have successfully installed
ubuntu 8.10 in virtual box.

Now, after the recent update, even my 8.04 Kubuntu works fine (well, at
least significant better)...but ONLY in my virtualbox.
Could it be just a video issue? In my virtualbox my NVIDIA card get's

behavior changed somehow since then. Now, instead of just crashing, it
freezed (i.e., the mouse kept working, but clicking anywhere on the

I managed to circumvent the problem by setting the USB mode to M/P (Camera
Control Pro, MTP/PTP) and importing the images via f-spot. The filenames were

The issue 4155 you linked to was raised in 2002 (six year ago) but still
not solved! They refer to the modelling of the feature and claim it is
an enhancement rather than a bug. But this is not the case, it's a pure
bug, probably in the model itself! As I wrote

Hmm... it looks like for me it was simply a matter of having a bad
package installed...
At one point I installed emacs-snapshot version 1:20080228-2~gutsy from
Alex Vassalotti. I realized at some point that emacs-snapshot in the
regular archives were now also built with xft support, and
That looks like mine, at least I think. The symbol 5th from the bottom
of the trace s the same. Since its not fabulously clear, I'll see if I
can get a slightly better picture.
