existed right before (beta) the release of Ubuntu 8.04, but has been

Thanks for this workaround: I can now connect to my WEP AP.
FYI: I installed Ubuntu 8.04.1 which only has the faulty software, so you
can not choose the older kernel anymore to connect to a WEP AO. Quite a
serious Ubuntu bug IMHO.

I need to add a note here. Partitioning failed on my first attempt. I
don't know why. I should have added that I'm dual-booting with Vista
Home Premium, sp1, one of the three cheap versions of that system. It
performs a sort of shadowing operation on a hidden drive, but that's
