I'm not sure if its of any use to some, but I was having this problem
and found a solution (thats nothing to do with gthumb - I dont have

This happens to me all the time under Karmic.
Usually when it happens, I'm not actively using the hamster UI. It
just dies, and then re-spawns pretty frequently ( a few times an hour ).
At least I don't have to re-start the current task! ;)

It might be a malfunction related to some obscure aspects of firefox. I
connected with seamonkey and could successfully administer the
printer(s). Don't have any idea about the intrinsic nature of the bug.

Opera systray icon is transparent.
This feature have been added in Opera v9.0 Build 8493 Beta :
On UNIX the tray icon is transparent now
but this transparency is not welcome when a tooltip appears above the
opera icon and pollutes it.

I got it to compile in staging in our ubuntu-karmic git.

As for carrying this in Karmic, we prefer that the driver at least be
on its way out of staging before we consider it for inclusion. This
keeps the not-inconsiderable maintenance cost of an non-mainstream patch
and its churn
