I'm on a Macbook2,1 with Intel GM945 chipset. I confirm that with Karmic
alpha 3, the behaviour of the brightness controls is much better. I
cannot, however, turn the backlight all the way off using the hotkeys as

I have found the culprit! To me it looked like different solutions
worked sometimes for some and sometimes for other and that there is no
universal solution. I realized that this bug is triggered because of a
race condition.
The network is not up after the network init script has finished, it is
Blacklisting acer_wmi reverts this behaviour, so it is probably
something related to acer_wmi.

I Do not have .ecryptfs directory in my home folder. I have located one in
/var/lib/ecryptfs/neferty:

nefe...@neferty:~$ cd /var/lib/ecryptfs/neferty; ls -al
total 20
drwx-- 2 neferty neferty 4096
It seems to me that gscan2pdf is trying to read the image before it has
been fully written.
scanimage was modified in 1.0.20 to buffer the image, and to write it
only when complete.
Please try the attached patch, which flushes the filesystem buffers
immediately before importing the image.
