System hung near completion of installation of NetBeans

Binary package hint: rhythmbox
Rhythmbox used to play audio fine before upgrading to Ubuntu ver 9.0.4,
but now there is no sound, not from Rhthymbox, or any other multimedia
apps. I reinstalled the sound card drivers to no avail. Soundcard =
