I've made some progress, and autoregistration is now succeeding for me.
I had to ditch the localhost registrations, and use a real IP address.
I pulled that functionality into a single place, that can be sourced by
each upstart file.
As of 1am, this is working for me.

After updating to 2.6.28-15, I edited /etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf with ARRAY
statements listing all my arrays (including the array for my root file
system). Then, I did dpkg-reconfigure initramfs-tools to recreate the
RAM disk image

report Log. I know that you cannot change or improve the NVIDIA drivers

@Cody, that's not going to fix this bug. With nVidia in twinview you
have one big screen so only one screen 0, no screen 1 at all. As a
result when you restrict xsplash to screen 0, you get it spanning over
both screens. So for me nothing looks to have changed at all.

While manually partitioning and selecting to format a reiserfs partition
(to confirm that bug 431976 does affect the current kubuntu livecds),

I did not have the problem on a Fresh install... so it seems to be an
upgrade problem, could this bug be moved to a totem bug my guess is
that the version of totem in 9.10 reads the old config file and causes
this.

Video colors appear inverted in Karmic Alpha 5 with non-free driver.
I can reproduce on my desktop now. Somehow something is totally b0rked
if you have more than two signals. Try modifying
/etc/gdm/PreSession/Default so that it passes --add-signal=foobar to
xsplash. This seems to trigger the problem.

If I log out and log in, all the applets are correctly loaded.
All I can say is, on my machine, the log in sequence is quite long,
especially after a reboot. So may be some too
